Overview
The primary objective of the Research Centre for the History of the Hungarian Language and Language Planning is to conduct innovative, interdisciplinary research on the Eurasian relationship network of the Hungarian language, to promote public awareness of its historical significance and to develop an up-to-date language strategy and language development guidelines based on research into the historical and contemporary context of the Hungarian language in the Carpathian Basin.
The research conducted by the Research Centre contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the history, development and cultural role of the Hungarian language. Based on its scientific findings, the Centre supports the preservation and development of the Hungarian language and works to strengthen its social prestige.
Mission
The mission of the Research Centre is:
- to explore the historical values of the Hungarian language;
- to identify innovative directions in etymological research;
- to present the network of connections between the Hungarian language and other Eurasian languages;
- to document and revitalize the dialectal heritage;
- to strengthen the role of the Hungarian language in the Carpathian Basin;
- to support research on language law and multilingualism;
- to enhance the prestige of the Hungarian language; and
- to integrate new findings in Hungarian linguistic history and dialectology into education.
Key Strategic Tasks
The main strategic tasks of the Research Centre are:
- conducting research on Hungarian etymology, with particular emphasis on Hungarian linguistic elements preserved in the neighbouring languages of the Carpathian Basin;
- providing linguistic-historical support for interdisciplinary prehistoric research;
- continuing Eurasian areal and typological research;
- researching historical Hungarian dialects and supporting dialect standardization;
- analysing patterns of multilingualism in the Carpathian Basin; and
- developing proposals for a Hungarian language strategy and language planning.
The activities of the Research Centre contribute to:
- the advancement of linguistic research;
- developing a linguistic foundation for Hungarian prehistory;
- strengthening national self-awareness;
- providing linguistic support to Hungarian communities in the Carpathian Basin; and
- renewing the content and methodology of Hungarian language teaching in public education and further training for teachers.
