Overview

The primary objective of the Research Centre for the Preservation of Traditions and Historical Reconstruction is the scientifically based exploration, documentation and authentic reconstruction of the traditions, material culture, clothing, weaponry, lifestyle and intellectual heritage of the Hungarian people and other peoples with whom they are historically, culturally, or ethnically connected.

Drawing on the results of archaeological, historical, ethnographic and experimental research, the Research Centre creates and supports historical reconstructions that serve both scientific research and the authentic presentation of Hungary’s cultural heritage.

Key strategic tasks

The key strategic tasks of the Research Centre are:

  • the scientific reconstruction of Hungarian historical traditions;
  • the development of reconstructions of clothing, weapons, combat techniques and lifestyles;
  • the presentation of Hungarian culture during the Conquest, Avar, Hun, Scythian and Medieval periods;
  • scientific research, reconstruction and international representation of Hungarian equestrian warfare culture and hussar traditions;
  • historical examination of the hussar weaponry, attire, combat techniques, horsemanship and spiritual heritage;
  • comparative research on the cultural heritage of related and associated steppe peoples;
  • expert support for communities preserving traditions;
  • the development of historical authenticity standards; and
  • the application of research findings in public education and teaching.

Mission

Mission of the Research Centre:

  • scientific substantiation of Hungarian historical traditions;
  • development of an authentic historical reconstruction methodology;
  • creation of reconstructions based on historical and archaeological sources;
  • technical coordination of communities dedicated to preserving traditions;
  • preservation, research and experiential presentation of the Hungarian hussar heritage;
  • organizing exhibitions, presentations and cultural programs;
  • strengthening national identity through engaging experiences; and
  • the societal utilization of historical knowledge.

The activities of the Research Centre contribute to:
