Overview
The main objective of the Research Centre for Archaeology is to conduct research on the origins and early history of the Hungarian people, the conquest and the founding of the Hungarian state, as well as the excavation, documentation and multidisciplinary scientific processing of archaeological sites of exceptional significance to the Hungarian national heritage, and their social utilization throughout the Carpathian Basin and the entire Eurasian region.
By integrating the findings of archaeology with those of other scientific disciplines, the research conducted by the Research Centre contributes to our understanding of the early periods of Hungarian history, as well as to the preservation and presentation of the Hungarian archaeological heritage.
Key Strategic Tasks
The key strategic tasks of the Research Centre are:
- research into the archaeological sources of Hungarian prehistory;
- examination of the networks of relationships between the Hungarians and the pre-Conquest ethnic groups;
- exploration of the archaeological background of Hungarian ethnogenesis;
- research into the early Hungarian state and the Árpád-era centres;
- archaeological substantiation of royal, dynastic and national sites of remembrance;
- the protection of the pan-Hungarian cultural heritage of the Carpathian Basin; and
- the presentation of the Hungarian archaeological heritage in a way that strengthens national identity.
