Research Centre for Archaeogenetics and Anthropology

Overview

The mission of the Research Centre for Archaeogenetics and Anthropology is the authentic and scientifically sound exploration of the origins of the Hungarian people and the elaboration of a coherent historical narrative. Its interdisciplinary research focuses on the genetic analysis of the historical populations of the Carpathian Basin, with particular emphasis on the research of the Árpád dynasty - the founders of the Hungarian state - and the identification of the ethnogenesis of the present-day Hungarian people.

Using state-of-the-art molecular biology techniques, the Research Centre aims to create an archaic genome database that makes the origins of our genetic ancestors accessible as part of the public domain. It places special emphasis on ensuring that its scientific findings are recognised at the international level and that its research results on Hungary’s genetic heritage are presented in an easily understandable manner to the Hungarian public.

Mission

The mission of the Research Centre is:

to conduct authentic archaeogenetic research into the origins of the Hungarian people;
to conduct a comprehensive genetic analysis of the historical populations of the Carpathian Basin;
to explore the genetic relationships among the peoples of the Conquest, Avar, Hun and early Hungarian periods;
dynastic analysis of the Hungarian ruling houses and historical elite groups;
to determine the genetic heritage of the recent Hungarian population;
to develop archaic genome databases;
to strengthen international scientific integration; and
to make the results of genetic research accessible to the general public.

The activities of the Research Centre contribute to:
